The Shins - The Past and Pending chords & lyrics

Following previous posts of "Kissing the Lipless", "New Slang", "The Celibate Life", "Phantom Limb", "Caring is Creepy", "Split Needles", "Black Wave", "Australia", "Strange Powers" and "Sea Legs" to my Shins guitar chords page, I have now added "The Past and Pending", an oldie from the 2001 album "Oh, Inverted World".

Once again, while the lyrics and melodies are somewhate quirky, the chords are very playable, even for those in the early learning stages, consisting of E, D, A, G ; E, D, A, D for the verse and the chorus also featuring all major chords, A, D, G and C. The Shins - Sea Legs chords & lyrics

My last Shins post was "Strange Powers", which actually didn't feature on "Wincing The Night Away", but was the B side of this song, "Sea Legs", the 4th single from that album.

As with almost all of the Shins songs, the quirky intricacies of the lyrics and melodies suggest that they would be hard songs to play, but again, this song has only 4 chords - G, D, A# ( Bb) and F. The rhythm of the chords sometimes seems to go counter to the melody, but it just takes a little getting used to!

The Shins "Strange Powers"

As I said in a previous post, I'm a huge fan of the Shins, and will try to get as many playable versions of their songs on my Shins guitar chords page as possible - but a lot of their stuff is pretty quirky, and the songs don't always translate to playing simplified acoustic versions.

But one of my favourite of their songs is a cover they did of Magnetic Fields' "Strange Powers", for which the rhythm guitar part uses just 5 chords - F, C, G, Dm and Am. The song doesn't feature on "Wincing the Night Away", but was the "B-side" for the "Sea Legs single.

The Shins 'Australia' guitar chords & lyrics

Just realized that it's nearly five months since I added a song from my newest 'favourite band', The Shins - shame on me!

The songs are pretty quirky, and difficult enough to work out, although in the end, reasonably easy to play. This time around, sticking with the 'Wincing the Night Away' album, I've worked out the chords and lyrics for 'Australia'. The chords are: E, C#m, F#m and A - if you find these too difficult, put your capo on the 2nd fret and play D, Bm, Em and G ( substituting D for E, Bm for C#m etc. ). The Shins - Black Wave chords and lyrics

As promised, I am continuing to include a Shins song in each monthly update.

Sticking with the latest album ( "Wincing the night away" ), this time I've gone for "Black Wave", one of my favourite tracks from the album.

I've worked out my interpretations of the chords and lyrics - somewhat surprisingly it consists of just three easy chords - G major, E minor and B minor. Obviously impossible to recreate the original sound with just three chords on an acoustic guitar, but the intent of my site ( and this blog ) is to provide playable songs for those in the early learning stages. You can still get a lot of satisfaction ( and fun ) from playing 'busking' versions of your favourite songs.

The Shins - Caring is Creepy chords and lyrics

My first exposure to the Shins, as with quite a few bands, was hearing one of their songs ( New Slang ) on the TV show "Scrubs". I bought the album "Oh Inverted World", but really only gave it a few listens. Walking the pup has proved to be a great way for me to rediscover bands like this, as my random MP3 player list throws up gems that make me take out the player to check the band and song.

This has happened with several Shins songs, so I created a seperate Shins page on my free guitar songs website a few weeks ago. I have now worked out my interpretation of "Caring is Creepy", and have added it to my The Shins songs page - check it out at the link below:

The Shins - Split Needles Chords and Lyrics

Finally getting back up to date with my Shins song versions, this time I've added "Split Needles" from their brilliant "Wincing the Night Away" album. I may still go back to their earlier stuff, particularly "Oh Inverted World" - these are one of those bands that 'nearly got away', now that I've started to listen to them in earnest, I'd really like to work out some more playable versions of the songs.

The song is actually in the key of D minor, but I've suggested using a capo on 3rd fret and playing in Bm, which means you use chords Bm, D, A, G, E which should suit most players' capabilities

The Shins - Phantom Limb Chords

The Shins ( hailing from Portland, Oregon )have been around for quite a long time, recording their first album in 1997 as "Flake Music" - my first post of one of their songs was "New Slang" from the 2001 album "Oh, Inverted World". I had also previously posted "This Celibate Life" ( ironically enough, on St. Valentine's Day... ), and "Kissing the Lipless".

I've only had a few listens to their 2007 album "Wincing the Night Away", but enough for me to know they will be a band I will follow, and hopefully continue to work out playable versions of their songs for learning guitarists.

So, as I've worked out the chords and lyrics to "Phantom Limb", I've also created a Shins guitar chords page, and moved the older songs from their previous location on my Rock Songs guitar chords page.

The Shins - New Slang Chords

Watched the film "Garden State" recently and was delighted to hear a great song from Albuquerque's "The Shins" from ( I think ) their first album, called "New Slang", which featured in the movie. I've only recently become a fan myself, so the song sounds as fresh and current to me as their new stuff. I think I've left enough hints to hope that their latest album " Wincing The Night Away" might be in my stocking on Christmas morning ........
