Lisa Mitchell "Neapolitan Dreams" guitar chords and lyrics
Regular readers of my Blog will know that as I try to come up with good new songs for the website, I use TV shows and TV ads quite a lot for my inspiration.
The song from the UK "Surf" ad caught my attention quite a few weeks ago, but only this week I managed to catch the artistname and song title from a radio play - it's "Neapolitan Dreams" by Lisa Mitchell. I have to confess I knew nothing of Lisa, but have discovered from the ever-reliable Wikipedia that she is a young Austrialian singer-songwriter, and the song "Neapolitan Dreams" is from the soundtrack of "Packed to the Rafters", an Australian Comedy show. This album looks worth checking out, as it also features songs by Jason Mraz, Gabrielli Cilmi and Jose Gonzalez, among others.
"Neapolitan Dreams" is a really cute little song, and easy to play, featuring only 4 chords - C, C/B Am F, a very common riff - but Lisa gives the song a really distinctive sound. It is certainly one of those songs to add to the repertoire ( particularly for female guitarist/singers ), with it's anthemic "Ba-da, ba-da-da-da-da..." sing along bit at the end of the chorus, it should go down well at sessions with friends / family.

Iron and Wine - "Passing Afternoon" chords and lyrics
Iron and Wine fans will be pleased to hear that, having posted chords & lyrics for my first Iron & Wine song ( Flightless Bird, American Mouth ) only yesterday, I have posted another today - "Passing Afternoon".
Followers of the US series "House" may remember this one from the final double-episode of Season 4, played over the tearjerking moments...
If you are not an Iron and Wine fan, take time out to listen to their stuff. It might be easy to dismiss as 'Emo', but Sam Beam's singing is absolutely knockout, lying somewhere between Neil Young, Michael Stipe and Jeff Buckley, while not sounding like any of these - just unique.
For the early learning guitarist, most of their stuff is a godsend, simple chords but with really tuneful melodies, so if you can nail them vocally, you can sound really professional without being a guitar virtuoso.
Just to repeat from the previous post, that I also have chords and lyrics to "Such Great Heights" which was an Iron and Wine cover of the Postal Service original. I've listed it as a Postal Service song, but I think my interpretation covers both versions.

Iron and Wine - Flightless Bird, American Mouth Chords & Lyrics
Once again, I have no excuses to offer. My daughters have been singing the praises of Iron and Wine for years now, and I'm finally getting round to posting my first chord & lyric interpretation of one of their songs - the gorgeous "Flightless Bird, American Mouth", from their 2007 album "The Shepherd's Dog" ( it was also released as an iTunes single in 2008 ).
I had heard their excellent version of the Postal Service song "Such Great Heights", but as I'd already posted the original version of that to my Rock song chords page and the chords seemed pretty much the same, there wasn't much point in reposting.
I worked the Iron and Wine song out while listening to a live version on YouTube ( see below ), it was played in the key of C, but with capo on 2nd fret bringing it up to D. You'd really need to play this one with the C set of chord shapes, as it has that nice C, C/B, Am run going all the way through. If you find it doesn't suit your voice, keep moving the capo up a fret until you find a key that suits, as this one doesn't really lend itself to transposition ( unless you move it right up to G, where the chords would be G, G/F#, Em, C, D - which would have a similar flowing chord set. Way too high ( or low ) for me tho! ).

Noah and the Whale - Shape of my Heart chords and lyrics
As with "5 Years Time" ( which is also featured on my Rock Guitar song chords page ) "Shape of My Heart" seems to have been another slow burner, in that both of these released earlier as singles from the 2008 album "Peaceful, the world lays me down", and have since both been re-released as singles, as the reputation of the band gains momentum.
I'm kinda undecided whether they're a good band or a GREAT band, the songs are really very simple, but have the same kind of appeal for me as The Kinks, or say, Belle and Sebastian. But they are good fun to play, and many ( including "Shape of My Heart" ) can be played with just 3 Major chords and one Minor.
I've worked out my version of the chords and lyrics for "Shape of my Heart" - it's in the key of F, chords are F, Bb, C with an Am in the chorus. If you're an early learner and find these chords difficult, you can transpose down to C and put a capo on the 5th Fret, so you'll be playing: G,C,F,C for the verse, and Em,F,C for the chorus. Check out my guide to chord transposition to learn how to do this for any song where you find the chords too tricky, or where the key of the song doesn't suit your voice.

Just finished working out chords and lyrics to my first song by Bon Iver, who's music I was introduced to by my daughters - their musical taste, as always, impeccable!
I've been listening to the album "For Emma, Forever Ago" ( which reached #1 in the US Top Heatseekers chart in 2008 ) for just a short while, but it's really growing on me. Badfinger - Come and get it chords and lyrics
I've often been listening to radio, or watching TV and a great old 70s song from my .. em.. infancy... comes on, and I think 'That's a brilliant guitar song, nice chord sequence, not too tricky, good melody' But I end up not working it out for inclusion on my guitar chords Website or this Blog on the basis that most of the guitar community are just too young to know the song.
This situation arose recently watching "Top of the Pops 2" when Badfinger appeared, playing "Come and Get It", a really nice pop/rock song, with a great melody, and mostly straightforward chords, with one or two challenging ones for the early learning guitarist.
So I figured that while there will be people going 'What-finger? - who???', that in the age of YouTube and Wikipedia there are no excuses for anyone not being able to listen to a song, or find out about an artist - I'll post it, and encourage people to have a listen and maybe learn a little about the band. They were actually mentored by none other than The Beatles ( particularly George, if memory serves ), and for a while were touted as the next BIG band from the Apple label.
Unfortunately tragedy overtook two of the band members, and the band never realised it's potential. But they have left us with some great tracks, and I'm happy to have worked out chords and lyrics to 'Come and Get it', which I've posted on my Pop guitar songs page, at the link below:

The Shins "Strange Powers"
As I said in a previous post, I'm a huge fan of the Shins, and will try to get as many playable versions of their songs on my Shins guitar chords page as possible - but a lot of their stuff is pretty quirky, and the songs don't always translate to playing simplified acoustic versions.
But one of my favourite of their songs is a cover they did of Magnetic Fields' "Strange Powers", for which the rhythm guitar part uses just 5 chords - F, C, G, Dm and Am. The song doesn't feature on "Wincing the Night Away", but was the "B-side" for the "Sea Legs single.

The Smiths "How soon is now" chords & lyrics
In a recent post I made the (slightly) exaggerated claim that "Oasis saved my life!" After the mid 70's punk and late 70's post-punk/new wave we entered into that musical void commonly known as the 80's. My point being that with the arrival of Oasis, I could once again pick up my guitar and work out and play a current song, after enduring 10 years of 'New Romance', Disco and electro-pop.
But there was one band who sustained me through the trauma - Stephen Patrick Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke & Mike Joyce - aka The Smiths. With a new album every year from 1984 to 1987, each packed with classic songs, few if any fillers, I really just switched off the radio and listened to REAL music by the few good bands there were - and The Smiths were tops.
I haven't worked on a Smiths song for some time, haven't even listened to their stuff much ( bad idea to group your iPod/Zen playlists by decade...! ) But I had mine on random play recently, and the booming reverb that kicks off "How Soon is Now" brough me right back. So, I've worked out the chords and lyrics, and added this song to the 16 Smiths already on my "Smiths song chords" page, you can check it out at the link below:

The Script "Man who cant be moved" chords & lyrics
I had already posted chords and lyrics for "Breakeven" by Dublin three-piece band The Script, who are maintaining the trend of new Irish band producing pop-rock anthems over the past few years.
"Breakeven" was actually the third single take from their eponymous first album, released in 2008, which contains a number of gems, and few, if any, "fillers".
I have now worked out my interpretation of their second single from the album "The Man Who Can't be Moved" and posted it to my Rock Guitar songs page, at the link below:

Nilsson - Without You chords and lyrics
As my site has now been around for 10 years, I've come to assume that I had posted all of the older, classic songs years ago. It's really only now, when I'm struggling to find good, new guitar songs, that the "Golden Oldie" radio stations are getting me to rush to the PC, just to confirm that the song I'm listening to is already on the site.
Which wasn't the case today, when listening to Harry Nilsson's "Without You", which for me will always be a classic 1970's ballad, while I know that many will think of it as a Mariah Carey song ( see... I'd written down Whitney Houston, but luckily Googled it, just to be sure...! ).
Either way, there can be very few of my website visitors and Blog readers who won't be familiar with the song, and it has the great advantage of being a huge ballad which was a big success for both a male and female singer, so let's take this one out of the shower and into the public performance domain, eh?

Arctic Monkeys - 'Bakery' Chords and Lyrics
Sometimes when I'm scraping around for good songs to add to the site, inspiration comes from unexpected places. Quite a few songs on the site are courtesy of the song appearing in a TV ad, or on a TV program like House or Scrubs.
This one was a post from one of my Facebook Friends Diona ( I've made a bunch of new FB friends from my participation in the Guitarist Groups and forums ). Not for the first time, a video post has introduced me to a song I hadn't heard, by one of my favourite bands - the Arctic Monkeys. The song was called "Bakery", and I couldn't find it on either "Favourite Worst Nightmare" or the debut album "Whatever people say, that's what I'm not".
Diona got back to me and identified it as being included on the "Fluorescent Adolescent" single, while not being on the album - thank you Diona!! So, I've worked out what I believe is a pretty playable version, and added it to my Arctic Monkeys chords page ( which already includes "Fluorescent Adolescent". No You Girls - Franz Ferdinand
You might well ask what I'm doing working out chords for a Franz Ferdinand song NOW, when I've pretty much ignored them thus far, even when they were winning the 2004 Mercury Prize, "Brit" awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act, with the "Franz Ferdinand" album also named as NME's Album of the Year.
In truth, I don't really have an excuse. Except maybe that there was such a plethora of good guitar music around those days the band just passed me by. Possibly the label "Dance-Rock" didn't help.
But... good rock guitar songs are becoming thin on the ground these days, and I'm struggling to find good new songs to give the newest batch of learning guitarists a chance of playing their favourite songs early on in the process. I check the US and UK Singles charts regularly, more in hope than expectation, but tonight ( coincidentally the name of their new album! ) I find, among the instantly forgettable and the songs I've already posted, a new entry at #27 in the UK charts for "No You Girls" by Franz Ferdinand. So I think, "can't hurt", and turn to the ever-reliable YouTube. I've been listening to the song all night since, only stopping to pause and check a chord here, a lyric there. The results of my attempts to work out a playable version of the song can be found at the link below:

Oasis - 'Falling Down" guitar chords & lyrics
Oasis saved my life!! Well... my musical life at least. After enduring the horrors of 80's disco and 'New Romance', I'd pretty much accepted that I'd just keep plodding on playing old 60's and 70's folk and rock songs. And then I heard the rip-roaring raucousness that was 'Definitely Maybe', and I was back on track - 15 years on I'm eagerly awaiting albums from Kings of Leon, Killers, Arctic Monkeys, The Fray, The Shins ... any of the great rock bands that resurfaced after that mid-90's guitar revolution and were influenced by it.
Which of course, still includes Oasis - their 2008 album 'Dig Out Your Soul' showed signs of a return to former greatness, leading to them receiving the NME award for "Best British Band of 2009"

Y'know, when I first heard Ray Lamontagne sing "You are the best thing", the song sounded so familiar I was sure it was his version of one of those great 1960's soul songs, but the album cover for the great "Gossip in the Grain" album on which it features says "all songs written by Ray Lamontagne". I guess the song is just *that* catchy!
Anyway, somewhat later than intended, I have worked out the chords & lyrics to "You are the Best Thing" and have posted them to my Soul/R&B page at the link below:

The Shins 'Australia' guitar chords & lyrics
Just realized that it's nearly five months since I added a song from my newest 'favourite band', The Shins - shame on me!
The songs are pretty quirky, and difficult enough to work out, although in the end, reasonably easy to play. This time around, sticking with the 'Wincing the Night Away' album, I've worked out the chords and lyrics for 'Australia'. The chords are: E, C#m, F#m and A - if you find these too difficult, put your capo on the 2nd fret and play D, Bm, Em and G ( substituting D for E, Bm for C#m etc. ). Ane Brun 'Big in Japan' guitar chords & lyrics
I have to admit, I hadn't heard of Ane Brun, who hails from Norway, until I tried to find out who sang the song on the Sky HD TV ad, and found it was her.
Not sure if "Big in Japan" has been released in Ireland/UK ( or even the US? ) but it's getting a load of airplay here in Ireland at the moment. I knew the song sounded familiar when I first heard it, but only when the chorus kicked in did I recognize it as another Cyndi Lauper song ( also covered by Alphaville ).
It's an amazing version of the song, if you can imagine Norah Jones singing with a Jeff Buckley guitar backing, you get the idea.
It's a lovely, soulful version of what was a pretty raucous pop song, as I recall it. I've worked out the chords and lyrics for the song, which you can find below. Just guessing, but I would imagine you just speed it up if you want to play the Cyndi Lauper / Alphaville version. Check it out at this link:

Bell X1 'The Great Defector' guitar chords & lyrics
Bell X1 ( pronounced 'bell-ex-one' ) are a hugely up-and-coming rock band from Kildare in Ireland, who are beginning to hit it big in the US ( some of their songs have featured on US TV shows like The O.C. and Grey's Anatomy )
I have already featured two of their songs on my 'Rock Songs' page: 'Flame' and 'Rocky Takes a Lover', and have now worked out the chords and lyrics for their latest single 'The Great Defector', from their soon-to-be-released 2009 album "Blue Lights on the Runway". All American Rejects - Gives You Hell chords & lyrics
Hard to believe that it is almost 2 years since the last time I posted chords and lyrics for an All American Rejects song, but it was indeed March 13th 2007 when I posted "Dirty Little Secret" chords to my Rock Guitar Chords page.
The band probably wouldn't make my all time Top 20 list, but they play their own inimitable style of Rock/Pop, and their songs are just fun - to listen to and to play!
The Oklahoma boys released a new album "When the World Comes Down" toward the end of 2008, and I've just finished working out my interpretation of the first ( and still the only ) single from the album "Gives You Hell", which you can find at the link below:

The Fray "You Found Me" chords and lyrics
Another one of those bands I keep meaning to listen to more of! Having posted the title track from "How to Save a Life" shortly after the album's release in 2005, I never quite got around to picking another track to listen to and work out chords for.
And so to their 2nd album "The Fray", due for release early next month. I'm diving in early this time, in hope to make more time to listen and work out at least a few of the songs.
I've made a start with the first single from the album "You Found Me". It was actually tricky enough, as the guitar is very low in the mix. Also the song has some tricky chords if you're a beginner, so I've transposed it down to C major - it should sound right if you play it with capo on 4th fret.

Snow Patrol - "Crack the Shutters" chords & lyrics
Following on from the huge success of "Take Back The City" ( see my previous post for chords & lyrics ), you can expect them to hit the heights again with their second single from "A Hundred Million Suns" - "Crack The Shutters".
Ashamed to say I still haven't made time to have a really good listen to the album, but I've been listening to "Shutters" on YouTube and have worked out my version of the chords and lyrics. If you're a beginner, some of the chords may sound and look tricky, but just follow the diagrams - the 'odd' chords are just variants of the C and FMaj7 which create little riffs, a little practice will see you right!

Niclas ( 18 ) started playing drums at the age of 8, and moved on to playing guitar in his early teens. He is a fan of Joe Satriani and finds his music inspiring, but at heart is a throwback to 1970's Glam Rock, naming Alice Cooper, Kiss and Motley Crue among his major influences.

The Script "Breakeven" guitar chords & lyrics
The Script are a new 3-piece pop/rock band from Dublin, who seem set to light up the music world.
Their eponymous debut album ( "The Script" ...! ) reached No. 1 in the UK and Irish album charts on the week of it's release ( Nov. 2004 ).
I have to say this band largely passed me by unnoticed until I heard the 3rd single from the album, "Breakeven" ( You might know of it as "I'm falling to pieces", from the repeated chorus line - I certainly thought that was the song title ). I need to get a hold of the album to catch up on the previous singles "We Cry" and "The man who can't be moved".

Duffy - "Rain on your Parade" chords and lyrics
I wasn't the only one to think Duffy's "Rockferry" was the best album of 2008 - witness the winning of the MOJO Awards "Album of the Year", and Q Awards "Breakthrough act of 2008", among the mountains of nominations, not to mention being the UK best-selling album of the year.
I had already worked out my interpreted versions of "Warwick Avenue", "Stepping Stone" and "Mercy", and originally added them to my Soul/R&B song chords page. Having now worked out the chords and lyrics to "Rain on your Parade", I've decided that Duffy merits a page of her own, and have created one at http://www.guitarsongs.info/duffy.htm. Nickelback 'If today was your last day' chords & lyrics
I don't actually have a Nickelback page on my guitar chords & lyrics site, but I had previously posted my interpretations of "You Remind Me", "Rock Star" and "Be Somebody" to my Rock song chords page, so I have now worked out an easy-to-play version of "If today was your last day", the second single from Nickelback's most recent album "Dark Horse - this is also posted to my Rock songs page at the link below:

Gabriella Cilmi - 'Warm this Winter' chords and lyrics
According to Wikipedia, Gabriella Lucia Cilmi "is a multi ARIA award-winning Australian singer and songwriter. She is best known for her debut single "Sweet About Me", released in March 2008."
My first time hearing this rising star was just over a year ago, when she sang "Sweet About Me" on Later with Jools Holland. I knew this was a young lady with a long and successful career ahead of her, and I worked out a playable version of "Sweet about me" which I posted at my Pop Songs guitar chords and lyrics page last June, when the song hit the top of UK, US and many other singles charts
Ms. Cilmi has a great new seasonal song in the charts called "Warm This Winter" - I have now worked out my interpretation of the chords and lyrics to the song, which I've posted at the link below:

Tom Waits - "Briar and the Rose" guitar chords
Always delighted to get requests for Tom Waits songs, mainly 'cos he's about my favourite artist, and also because I usually already have the chords for the song requested.
But typically...! Alan from Wellington, New Zealand requested chords for "Briar and the Rose" from the "Black Rider" album, which, I think, is the only Tom Waits album I don't own.
Strangely very little available on YouTube ( my reliable standby for songs I don't know ). I found a recent Live version of Tom singing the song at the French leg of his European tour, and a bunch of cover versions by various artists.
The live version was played in the key of E flat, so I stuck a capo on the first fret and worked out the chords in D, to be able to play along with the YouTube video. The other versions I checked out, and they were all in the key of G, so I've included both transcriptions in my interpretation of the song, which you can find at the link below:

Christmas songs from U2 and Bon Jovi/Eagles
In keeping with the season, I've hunted down two new songs to add to my Christmas song chords collection.
There were already 53 songs, ranging from the classic Christmas Carols through those jolly 50s rockers and ballads, the 70's glammed-up Christmas songs, and a few of the more recent seasonal songs.
This time I've worked out my versions to "Please Come Home for Christmas", originally by The Eagles, but probably more recognized as a Bon Jovi song ; I've also chorded "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), originally recorded by Darlene Love, but U2 recorded a brilliant version ( check it out on Youtube! ).

Tom Waits "Tell It To Me" guitar chords & lyrics
As a huge Tom Waits fan, its pretty bad form that I had to wait for a visitor's request to sit down and work out another song from the fabulous "Orphans". Anyone familiar with the album will know that there are 3 'themed' CDs - 'Bawlers' , 'Brawlers' and 'Bastards'.
The latter consists of some weird and wonderful pieces, some spoken, some with just Tom on voice-box, but pretty much none of which are suited to just playing solo on a guitar. The songs from 'Brawlers' are tricky enough too. So far I've worked out only "Rains on Me" from 'Brawlers', and 'Poncho's Lament', 'Long Way Home', 'Little Drop of Poison' and 'Fannin Street' from the gorgeous "Bawlers" CD - all of these posted to my Tom Waits song chords page
This time around it's another 'Bawler' - "Tell it To Me" - the chords should be suited to guitar players of all abilities ( chords are C, C7, G and F ), and you can find it at the link below:
