Arcade Fire are a great Canadian band founded in 2003 by husband and wife team Win Butler and Régine Chassagne.
Although I do really like the band, most of their songs I've heard don't really lend themselves to being played by early learners, either on acoustic or electric guitar.
I have previously posted "Wake Up" from the debut album "Funeral". Ironically it was highlighted to me by my nephew using it as the backdrop for a brilliant video montage he made of my eldest daughter's wedding in 2009. Excuse the paternal pride, but I'd be delighted if you'd like to check that one out, it's on Youtube at Nycola & Marc's wedding - Arcade Fire "Wake Up"
The chords and lyrics for both Wake Up and We Used to Wait are on my Miscellaneous Rock songs page at Rock songs guitar chords - W
"We used to wait" is another great song, the first single from the 2010 "Suburbs" album".
The song is in the key of C minor, but I have transposed it to A minor to create a set of chords which will be more suitable for the learning guitarist, or indeed for anyone playing the song. After transposition, the chords are: Am, C/G, F, D5 and Em. the C/G chord is just a C chord with the addition of the pinky on the 3rd fret, 1st string, i.e. 032013. D5 is a "Power Chord" and is played as x355xx. If you are in the early learning stages, you can just play standard C and D chords here, it will still sound fine.
To play along with the original, put a capo on the 3rd fret, and you will be playing in the same key as the original song.
My 'easy-to-play' interpretation of "We Used to Wait (for it)" is at Guitar Chords for Arcade Fire "We used to wait" .
Play along with the video below, or on Youtube at Arcade Fire "We Used To Wait (for it)" on YouTube

Guitar Chords and Lyrics - "Slow" by Rumer
Sara Joyce ( a.k.a "Rumer" ) has a voice which has been compared by many to the late Karen Carpenter. While this is of course a compliment, having heard just a few of the songs from Rumer's debut album "Seasons of My Soul", I think this lady has a distinctive voice of her own, and a wide range - if you haven't heard her songs yet, approach them with an open mind.
I believe Rumer is going to carve out a really strong niche in the smooth soul/jazz world. She has already toured with Joshua Radin and Jools Holland, and has had a number of songs written for her by the King of Smooth himself, Burt Bacharach.
I have worked out my simple chords and lyrics version of "Slow", and added it to my Pop Songs Guitar Chords page at the link below. The song, as in the video below, is in the key of F major / E flat minor, so I have transposed it down a semi-tone and chorded it in E major / D minor. Just place a capo on the 1st fret to bring it back to the original key, particularly if you want to play along with the original.
The chords are D minor 7th and E major for the verses, with an additional A major in the chorus. If you're not familiar with Dm7, it's just the first 3 strings of an F chord with the three bass strings not played, i.e. xxx211 on a standard EAGBDe tuning.
You can try out my version of the song at the link below:

Plan B "Love Goes Down" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
I usually find songs with a nice vocal, interrupted by a rap 'interlude' really annoying, but when I heard "She Said", the first single from Plan B's "The defamation of Strickland Banks", I was totally smitten with Ben Drew's ( aka Strickland Banks, aka Plan B ... ) fabulous vocal, and with the catchiness of the song itself. I worked out the chords and lyrics and posted them to my Soul and R & B song chords page.
I've also taken a shining to the last single released from the album "Love Goes Down", the vocal, if possible is even more soulful and uplifting.
I've now also worked out the chords for this one, lovely set of chords, Dm, Am7, Gm7, F, C and Bb. There was the temptation to transpose these to an easier set of chords for guitar beginners, but to be honest, these chords were just meant for the song, they complement the song's smooth, silky and soulful melody perfectly.
I've posted my chords and lyrics transcription of "Love Goes Down" on the Guitarsongs.info Soul, R&B page at the link below:

Katy Perry - Teenage Dream Guitar Chords and Lyrics
While some of my website visitors and blog readers may be surprised to see posts of Katy Perry songs at www.guitarsongs.info, not exactly being guitar-based songs, "Teenage Dream" is actually the third song by Katheryn Elizabeth Brand ( aka Katy Perry ), having previously posted "Hot'n'Cold" and "I kissed a girl" to my Pop songs guitar chords page.
But... they are good fun pop songs, they can be played on guitar, and I like to include as many songs by female vocalists as I can.
No denying Ms. Perry's popularity either, the album of the same name debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard 200, as well as reaching #1 in Ireland and New Zealand. The single did likewise, as well as topping the charts in the UK, Australia and Canada
I've worked out my version of the song, and added it to my Pop Songs Guitar Chords page at the Guitarsongs.Info link below.
In the video below, the song is played in the key of DMaj7 ( D Major Seventh ), with chords DMaj7, F#m E, which can be a bit tricky if you're a beginner. I have transposed it down two semitones to CMaj7, so that it can be played with just chords: CMaj7, D and Em - you'll have to listen to the song to get the strumming pattern. I've indicated that you should put your capo on the second fret if you want to play along with the original.

Villagers "That Day" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
Villagers are the latest of the new wave of Irish bands who are giving some musical hope at least to a country who's leaders seem determined to drag it down to the morass.
Their new album "Becoming a Jackal" reached number 1 in the Irish Album and Indie Charts, while also being nominated for a Mercury prize, while the band themselves were nominated for a Q award.
I first heard them on Jools Holland on BBC2, and was hooked, particularly to the whimsical "That Day", which is actually their 4th single.
I've worked out my version of the song, and added it to my Rock Songs Guitar Chords page at the Guitarsongs.Info link below.
If you listen to the video ( also below ), the song is actually played in the key of G# ( A flat ), but I've chorded it in the the key of G, and indicated that you should put your capo on the 1st fret to get the correct pitch for the recorded song.
After transposition to G, the chords are a fairly manageable set of G, C, D, E minor, B minor and G/F# ( which is just a transition chord between the G and the E minor and is played: 2xx003 )

Travis "Humpty Dumpty Love Song" Chords and Lyrics
I had previously worked out and posted chords and lyrics to Travis' "Flowers in the Window", "Side" and "Sing" from their "Invisible Band" album to my Travis song chords page, but had never actually listened to the album, other than those three singles.
My niece recently posted a YouTube video of the song "Humpty Dumpty Love Song", which is the last track on the album, and is actually one of the best Travis songs I've heard yet.
Chords are interesting, and not too tricky, verse is: C, G, Em, Am, F, Fm, C ; Chorus is just Am and C, and the Bridge is A, Dm, Dsus4, G7 and G. I have diagrams of all of the chords included.
I've added my transcription to the other nine songs on my Travis guitar chords page, you can find them all at the link below:

Paramore "Brick by Boring Brick" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
Although Paramore have been together for about six years, with three albums under their belts, "The Only Exception" ( which I worked out last month and posted to my Pop Songs guitar chords page ) was the first of their songs I'd ever heard, and it pretty much got me hooked!
On "Brick by Boring Brick", also from the latest album "Brand New Eyes", Hayley Williams shows that as well as the silky, sultry vocals she treated us with on "The Only Exception", she can really rock out the vocals when she wants to. It's a great rock song, I need to dig deeper into this album and the band's older work.
The song is in the key of A major, but I've transposed it down to G ( partly as this creates an easier set of chords, but mainly because I couldn't reach the high notes! ). If you want to play along with the song on CD or on the video below, you'll need to put a capo on the 2nd fret to bring the key back up from G to A.
The chords ( after transposition ) are Em, C, G and D through most of the song, with an A minor thrown in during the bridge. If you want to play without the capo, these will be F#m, D, A, E and B minor.
My interpretation of "Brick by Boring Brick" is now on Rock Songs Guitar Chords page of my website, at the link below:
Guitar Chords and Lyrics to Paramore - Brick by Boring Brick
When you've had a few practice runs, try playing along with the song above, or at YouTube - Paramore "Brick by Boring Brick". Remember that I've transposed the song from A down to G, so you'll need to either transpose back up to the A major set of chords, or just put a capo on the 2nd fret.

Biffy Clyro "Bubbles" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
This is my first attempt at chording a Biffy Clyro song - despite the fact that both of my daughters have been fans since they were a virtually unknown band more than 10 years ago! While I liked what I was hearing from them, I didn't think they had enough global appeal to be of interest to my site visitors or Blog readers.
Only in the past couple of years have the band become an 'overnight success', their last album "Only Revolutions" hitting the UK charts at number 8, and peaking at the number three spot.
"Bubbles" is actually the 5th single taken from the album, I must admit I haven't listented to it extensively, but it is certainly more commercial than the earlier stuff I'd heard, reminiscent of bands like Snow Patrol, Keane, with maybe a touch of Kings of Leon.
I have worked out my version of "Bubbles" - the song is in G sharp/A Flat, so I've worked it out with a capo on the 1st fret, which means you can play it with chords in the key of G, and still play along with the record. Chords are mostly simple - G, D, E minor 7, B minor, A, A sus4, and F#/Dsus4 ( which is not as tricky as it sounds, being 2x0233, i.e. play the Dsus4 chord and hold down the 2nd fret, 6th string with your thumb ).
Although it's a 'rock band' kind of song, you can have fun with it on an acoustic, and it still sounds good. My transcription of Bubbles is now on my Rock Songs guitar chords page at the link below

Manic Street Preachers "It's Not War" chords and lyrics
I have only a few Manic Street Preachers' songs - the last song of theirs I worked out and posted was in 2007!
I do quite like the band, and always have, but a lot of their songs haven't really been strong enough to make me want to play them. Only "If you Tolerate This" and "Your're love alone is not enough" have previously made it to my Pop Songs Guitar Chords page.
I do quite like the new single "(It's not War), Just the end of love", which I only heard a short while ago. It's a bit rockier than some of their older stuff, and the chords were quite tricky.
To make them reasonably playable, I had to transpose them down FIVE semitones, which means you will need to put your capo on the 5th fret if you want to play along with the original. Even at that, the intro has a little: C, C/Bb, Bb; Bb, Am, C riff which very early learners will probably find difficult. Of course, if you're just playing for fun, you can ignore the intro altogether, in which case the chords for the verse are: C, F and G, and the chorus chords are: Am F G, G G F (x2) and Em F.
The intro chords appear again as the riff after the 2nd chorus, but if you find them too tricky, you can just leave them out.

You should try playing along with the song above, or at YouTube - Manic Street Preachers "(It's Not War) Just the end of love". The band play the song in the key of F, but I've chorded it in C major, so you'll need to put a capo on the fifth fret to play along in the correct key.

If you can get to grips with it, it's a fun song to play, and my interpretation is now on my Rock Songs guitar chords page at the link below

Leonard Cohen "Feels So Good" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
I can hardly believe that I'm typing this, but I have just worked out chords and lyrics for a NEW song by the 74-years-young legend that is Leonard Cohen!
Leonard Cohen's music has been a part of my life since I was a curious teenager, swimming through the oceans of bland music in search of a few islands of hope and joy. I was fortunate enough to discover 'Songs from a Room', and have been a huge fan since. This is a very humble tribute to Leonard Cohen, but you get the picture.
I was unfortunate not to be able to catch him live on his 2009 tour, but the DVD of the London performance has provided me with over 2 and a half hours of spiritual renewal and uplift many, many times.
"Feels so Good" doesn't seem to have featured on that tour, but is now one of the songs Leonard plays as he tours yet again in 2010. To still be writing songs, and indeed undertaking arduous tours, at the time other men of his age have settled for the TV remote, is an indication of the passion and the creativity of the man.
While this is by no means Leonard's best work, it fits in so well with the whole 'vibe' of his recent tours, and has some wonderful wry lyrics - "Cup of coffee in the kitchen, fire up a little danger to my health"...
I'm delighted to be adding to my store of Cohen song chords again, I've posted this one to the link below:
Guitar chords and lyrics - "Feels so Good" by Leonard Cohen
You might enjoy playing along with the song above, or on Youtube at Leonard Cohen - "Feels So Good" live in Chicago . To the best of my knowledge the song hasn't appeared on a studio album as yet, but there are a number of live versions available on YouTube.

Guitar Chords and Lyrics - Joshua Radin "I'd rather be with you"
Joshua Radin is one of those artists who just seems to pass me by, I never seem to hear his songs on radio. I had previously posted my chords and lyrics version of "Closer", which was from Joshua's debut album "We Were Here", but which I actually first heard in an episode of "Scrubs" ( which has been a great source for me in finding good artists I might never have otherwise heard ).
I did recently hear "I'd rather be with you" played on Irish radio, and assumed it was his new single, but a little research shows that this is from his 2nd album "Simple Times", released in 2008, and he actually has a new album "The Rock and The Tide" currently in pre release. I must keep my ears open this time!
In any case, I have worked on creating a simple version of the song, and my interpretation is now on my Pop Songs guitar chords page at the link below

Alicia Keys "Sleeping with a broken heart" Guitar chords and lyrics
Having not posted a song from Alicia Keys for over two years, I'm making up for it now by posting two in quick succession. I recently posted my interpretation of "Empire State of Mind (Part 2)" to my Pop Songs guitar chords page, and have now worked out the chords and lyrics to another great song from her "The Element of Freedom" album - "Sleeping With a Broken Heart". The song reached No. 2 in the U. S. R & B charts earlier this year.
Alicia sings the song in the key of F major, but I have transposed it to D major, to create an easier set of chords for beginners to play. If you want to play along with the song, just put a capo on the third fret, and you will be in key.
After transposing, the chords are very easy just G major, A major and D major in the verse, and G/F#, E minor, A major, D major and G major in the chorus. Don't worry about the G/F#, its just one of those transition chords leading from the G to the E minor and is shaped 2xx003, so from the G just remove your middle finger and place the index finger on the 2nd fret of the 6th string, muting the 5th and 4th.
I have posted my version of the chords and lyrics for "Sleeping With a Broken Heart" and added them to my Pop Songs guitar songs page at the link below:

The Script "For The First Time" Guitar Chords and Lyrics
I had previously posted chords and lyrics for "Breakeven" and "The Man Who Can't be moved" from the debut self-titled album by Dublin three-piece band The Script, who are maintaining the trend of new Irish bands breaking onto the international scene in recent years. The band have recently played support for such luminaries as U2 and Paul McCartney.
If anything, their second album, "Science and Faith" is even better than "The Script", both being among those rare albums where every song is a gem, with no makeweight or lightweight songs.
I have now worked out my interpretation of their first single from the new album, "For the First Time" and posted it to my Rock Guitar songs page , at the link below:

Guitar Chords Mumford and Sons "Winter Winds"
This is my third effort at working out chords and lyrics for songs from the recent and brilliant "Sigh no More" album by London's "indie/folk/rock" band Mumford and Sons.
"Winter Winds" was the second single released from the album, and while it didn't meet with the chart success achieved with "Little Lion Man" or "The Cave" ( these being the previous songs I've worked out chords and lyrics for ), I think it's right up there with the others as a classic folk/rock song, with brilliant instrumentation and vocal harmonies, and once again an anthemic chorus to sing along to!
As for the other two, this is quite an easy song to play, with the verses being repeated G D Em C, and the chorus being a repeated C G C G D. Technically there is a C9 or C/D chord in there too ( which is played as 032030 ) and the G chord sounds best played as 320033 rather than 320003.
I have worked out my version of the chords and lyrics for "Winter Winds" and added them to my Rock Songs guitar songs page at the link below:

Paolo Nutini "Ten out of Ten" Guitar Chords
Paolo Nutini is a really versatile artist, and singer-songwriter. Having first attracted my attention with his wispy ballads from his debut album "These Streets" - especially "Last Request" and "New Shoes", and the debut single "Candy" from "Sunny Side Up", he certainly got into the spirit of the Summer of 2010 with his latest singles.
"Pencil Full of Lead" was a bright and breezy single which I posted a short while ago to my Paolo Nutini guitar song chords page, where I also have chords and lyrics for "Last Request", "New Shoes", "Worried Man" and "Candy".
His new single "Ten out of Ten" ( 10/10 ) is equally bouncy, with a light ska / reggae rythm reminiscent of Madness' "The Prince" and of course with Paolo's distinctive vocal, which always sounds like he's having a good time!
I've worked out the chords and lyrics for "Ten out of Ten" - chords are really easy and very suited to learning guitar players - just combinations of C, G and F - and I've posted them to my Paolo Nutini Song chords and lyrics page at the link below

Eliza Doolittle "Pack Up" guitar chords and lyrics
This is another 'debut' artist for my website and Blog. Not too surprising, I guess, since it's just the second single from Eliza Doolittle's self-titled album which was released only last month ( July 2010 ).
It's a really infectious pop song, in the vein of Lady Lenka, Gabriella Cilmi and Cathy Davey - all artists who's songs I have previously interpreted for guitar learners and posted to my Pop Guitar song chords and lyrics page.
The hook in the chorus of the song ( sung by Lloyd Wade ) is taken from the title of the 1915 song "Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag", but the song itself was written by Eliza. With the album reaching number 3 in the UK charts, and the single currently at number 8, Londoner Eliza looks like establishing herself alongside the other great female singer-songwriters of today.
The song ( as featured on Youtube ) is in the key of B major, but I have transcribed it to G, giving a much easier set of chords for the learning guitarist to get to grips with. If you put a capo on the 4th fret and play the chords as indicated, you should be able to play along with the original ( G major + 4 semitones = B major ).
When I was messing around with the song I was originally playing C D at the end of each verse leading into the G at the beginning of the chorus, but on closer listening to the song I believe these chords are C diminished ( xx1212 ) and C# diminished ( xx2323 ). Early learners might be happy to stick with the C and D chords, but the diminished chords sound better to me.
I have added "Pack Up" to my pop songs guitar chords page at the link below, I hope you'll have lots of fun with it.

The Doors "Break on Through to the Other Side" chords and lyrics
I'm not sure if "Break on through to the other side" has featured in a recent movie, in a TV ad, or if there is just a resurgence of The Doors music, but, not having heard this song in years, it has literally been all over Irish radio stations in the past few months.
My first reaction was to go to my Doors songs guitar chords page, and have a go at playing the song again. Then realized I had never worked out the song, or at least never added it to this page, which I first uploaded in 1999.
Second thought was that maybe it was one of those songs which didn't translate too well to just playing chords on an acoustic guitar, but I decided to have a go anyway!
While I can't claim the transcription I came up with is going to make you sound like the late, great Jim Morrison, it does offer a very simplified chords and lyrics version of "Break on Through" which guitarists of most levels should be able to have fun with.
Obviously if you have a friend who can shred some of those doom-laden Doors licks along with your playing, so much the better, but - give it a go anyway! The good news is that you only need to know two chords - D major (D) and E minor (Em). You will really need to listen to the original to get the strumming patterns, but I've indicated the chord changes as best I can.
I've added my transcription to the other Doors songs on the page ( People are Strange, Riders on the Storm, Hello I love you and Light My Fire, you can find them all at the link below:

Imelda May "Big Bad Handsome Man" Chords & Lyrics
This is my first attempt at interpreting one of the divine Imelda Mary Higham's great songs, but in response to a request on Facebook I decided to give it a go.
For those not familiar with the whole Imelda May phenomenon, Imelda and her band, from Dublin, have re-introduced Rockabilly to Irish music listeners who have become increasingly starved of any music with a whiff of rock'n'roll to it.
Her second album "Love Tattoo" and her subsequent tour of the album made Irish music fans really sit up and listen! Imelda won the award for Best Female at the 2009 Meteor Awards, and has also performed at the 2010 Grammy awards with Jeff Beck. Just a matter of time before the rest of Europe and the US catch up with her alternately smooth and raucous jazzy vocal style.
"Big Bad Handsome Man" was the second single released from "Love Tattoo" ( check out the brilliant first single - "Johnny got a Boom-Boom" ! )
Although my transcription is a basic chords and lyrics version, it is ( I hope! ) a very playable one. The song was in the key of B flat minor - not one to encourage the early learner - so I transcribed it down a semitone to A minor, which means the only chords you need are Am and E ( just put a capo on the 1st fret to bring it back to the original key ).
The trickiest part is getting the rhythm right. I'm afraid that I'm not an expert in formal rhythm structures, but it's a kind of "Cha-cha, cha" strum on each chord, as indicated in the transcription below. There is also a nice jazzy chord to end the song which I haven't quite figured out yet. I indicated it as Cmaj7, as there seems to be both a C and a B note, but I'm pretty sure that's not right - corrections welcome!
Ok, so I have added this to my Rock songs guitar chords page at the link below, I hope you'll have lots of fun with it. And do check out "Love Tattoo" if you already haven't, and if you get the chance to catch Imelda and the band live, don't miss it!!

Florence and the Machine - "You've got the Love" chords and lyrics
Having posted my first Florence and the Machine song transcription ( Dog Days are Over ) just a short while ago, I have every intention of posting more songs by the brilliant Florence Welch, who won the Critics Choice award at last year's Brit Awards, and have now worked out chords and lyrics for "You've got the love", the fifth single from the fabulous debut album "Lungs".
The song itself has certainly been around, having been recorded previously by The Source, Candi Staton and Joss Stone.
The song is in the somewhat tricky key of B flat ( F minor ), so I have transposed it down a semitone to A ( E minor ), which makes it much more playable, particularly for early learners. Just put your Capo on the first fret if you want to try playing along with the song. After transcription, the chords are just Em, D and A - a really easy sequence for beginners.
I've posted my interpretation of "Dog Days are Over" in simple chords and lyrics format to my Rock songs chords page, just click on the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics - Cathy Davey "Little Red"
Cathy Davey is a singer-songwriter from Dublin, Ireland, who first came to my attention when I heard "Reuben", which was a No. 1 single from her second album "Tales of Silversleeve ( Irish album of the year 2007 ). Loved the song, so I worked out the chords and lyrics and posted them to my Pop Songs guitar chords page.
Hadn't really heard much more of her work until "Little Red" hit the radio waves, having been released as the first single from her new album "The Nameless". Another bouncy, catchy song - I will have to check out the other songs on this album, particularly the new single "Army of Tears", which I've yet to hear.
Anywaze, I have worked out a playable version of "Little Red", and posted it to my Guitar Chords and Lyrics website at the link below. Nice easy set of chords, just G, Em for much of the song, with C, A and D featuring in the chorus. Trickiest part for me was trying to reach those high notes on the "Oooooooo, Oooooooh-ooh-ooh-ooh" bits!
