John Mayer "Heartbreak Warfare"

Ok, I will always have an affection for John Mayer's earlier works, the songs on "Room for Squares" and "Heavier Things" were almost all classics. "Continuum" seemed to bring him closer to mainstream, albeit with a bluesy edge - on the plus side, these songs were less intricate, and a little easier for the learning guitarist to get to grips with.

His latest album "Battle Studies" sees him return to his strenghths. "Heartbreak Warfare" is the 2nd single from the album ( I had already posted my interpretation of the debut single "Who Says" to my John Mayer song chords page. While it is reminiscent of some of the earlier songs, the warm fuzzy lyrics ( "Your body is a wonderland", "Come back to bed" ) have had a healthy injection of cynicism which, I think, adds strength and depth to the songs.

While the range of chords will probably be beyond the scope of the very early learner, don't be put off by the number and apparent complexity of the chords if you have a reasonable repertoire of chords - these are mainly 'sus2' and 'Maj7' chords. The notes shown after the '/' indicate the addition of an additional bass note, but if you find this a bit of a stretch, just try playing the standard Dsus2 or Fmaj7 chord, learn the song, and work on the embellishments at a later stage.

I've indicated the finger positions for the chords at the start of the transcription, showing the frets to be held for each string, thickest to thinnest, so that Asus2=x02200 means 'mute the bass E string, leave A string open, hold down 2nd fret on D and G strings, and play the B and treble E strings open.

I've added this to my list of 17 songs, covering all 3 albums, on my John Mayer page at the link below:

2 Door Cinema Club "Something Good can work" chords & lyrics

Once again I'm sticking with electro-pop as being the best of new music, given the shortage of actual guitar based songs in the charts or on the radio these days. This time it's a catchy little number "Something Good can Work" by Northern Ireland band Two Door Cinema Club, from their debut album "Tourist History. They begin a tour of Ireland and the UK shortly, having opened for Phoenix on their 2010 tour.

Obviously songs like this one would be more suited to anyone playing or learning to play electronic keyboards, but I have worked out what I hope is a "buskable" version for guitar players, I'm sure the chord sequence would work fine on keyboards also.

I think it can sound ok as just a guitar song, trickiest part is not stumbling over the rapid-fire lyrics! The song is in the key of F, but I have worked out a simple version for early learners in the key of C, where the chords are: C major, A minor, E minor, F major and G major. Just place a capo on the fifth fret, and you will be playing back in G, so can play along with the song.

My guitar version of "Something Good Can Work" has been uploaded to my Rock songs chords page, you can find it at the link below:

Florence & the Machine "Dog Days" chords and lyrics

Surprised it has taken me so long to post my first 'Florence and the Machine' song chords and lyrics, given that the brilliant debut album "Lungs" hit #1 in the UK charts in January, and won the Best British Album at the 2010 Brit Awards.

I have now worked out chords and lyrics for the second single from the album "Dog Days are Over", really simple chords, just G, E minor and A minor - pretty much the first three chords a guitar beginner will learn.

Having been a bit slow off the blocks, I will certainly be working out some more of the songs from this album, and will post them to the site soon, meanwhile I've added my interpretation of "Dog Days are Over" in simple chords and lyrics format to my Rock songs chords page, just click on the link below:

Carolina Liar "Show me what I'm looking for" chords and lyrics

"Show me what I'm looking for" was the first single from "Coming To Terms", the debut album by Caroloina Liar, a Rock Band from L.A. via Sweden.

Have to say when I first heard the song, I was sure it was Coldplay, there is a really marked similarity in the sound.

Having said that, it's a really good song, and I've worked out a version which is really easy to play, with just chords F, Am, C and G.

I've posted my version of "Show me what I'm looking for" in simple chords and lyrics format to my Rock songs chords page, you can find it at the link below:
