Rory Gallagher - Messin' with the Kid chords

Ok, I'm definitely 'punchin' above my weight' here. But... I'm a huge Rory Gallagher fan, and I actually have a Rory Gallagher chords page on my website.

I was just checking out some great YouTube coverage of concert clips from the 70's when I hit upon a mindnumbing version of "Messin' with the Kid", and realized I hadn't included this in the (short) list of Rory songs I have.

Now I know that the chords are a tiny fraction of what's going on in Rory's blues music, but I also know that people ( i.e. ME! ) like to play along with their favourite music from time to time. Also, from experience, I know that learning guitarists love to get into jam sessions with the more accomplished players, so if you're friendly with a guitar-shredding Rory fan, being able to play along with the rhythm for the song is priceless practice - and great fun!

So, I've worked out my usual basic chord pattern for the song, if you want to try it out, click on the link below:

Keane - "Spiralling" guitar chords and lyrics

Just checking through my Blog and observe that the last Keane song I posted was "Is it any wonder", from "Under the Iron Sea", way back in 2006.

Keane are another of the many bands I quite like, and who produce some really good songs, but I'm not committed enough to create a 'Keane' page on my site just yet.

I heard "Spiralling" from the yet-to-be-released "Perfect Symmetry" album, and was pretty impressed, the single ( assuming that it will be ) is at least as good as their better stuff from the previous two albums. I'll try to get hold of a copy of the new album, and if I like the songs, will post more songs in my usual simplified 'chords & lyrics' format. Watch this space!

Meanwhile, you can check out my interpretation of "Spiralling" on my Keane Guitar chords page at the link below:

Vampire Weekend - Mansard Roof chords and lyrics

Vampire Weekend are another of the new bands I've taken a shine to, although I've only had a few listens to their debut "Vampire Weekend" album, released earlier this year.

Hard to put a label on the band, lot of influences, certainly an African flavour, and there are hints of the Shins and a few other 'Indie Rock' ( yet another expression that has been virtually rendered meaningless by overuse! ) bands.

My interpretation of the guitar chords and lyrics for the first single from the album "Mansard Roof" are available at the link below:

Duffy - "Warwick Avenue" chords and lyrics

Ok, regular visitors to the Blog or to the website ( PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics ) will know that I have an eclectic mix of songs across a number of genres, and over a number of decades. They do all have one thing in common - I like them! While I never turn away requests for help with chords for any song, I only actually post songs to the site and blog if I would enjoy playing them myself

You will find very few ( if any ) rap songs, gangsta songs, rhythm & bass etc songs ( as opposed to rhythm'n'blues - I have a 'Soul/R&B song chords' page dedicated to these ). Which is why it is usually only as a last resort that I turn to checking out the UK and US singles charts for inspiration for new songs. But on a few occasions, I've been glad I did. At the beginning of this month I was browsing the UK charts and found "Warwick Avenue" - a song I'd heard just a few times on radio, but which I really liked. For some reason I had pigeon-holed Duffy into the above categories, but I was determined to include "Warwick Avenue", so I've worked out a chords and lyrics version for guitar, it's on my "Soul/R&B song chords page (link below:)

The Kooks - "Shine On" chords and lyrics

I have earlier posted the first single from the Kooks brilliant "Konk" album - "Always where I need to be", which was a #3 hit in the UK singles chart.

The second single "Shine On" has only had modest success in the singles chart, but as "Konk" spent some time at #1 in the album chart this is probably understandable.

Another really catchy, fun to play song in the Kooks inimitable style. I've worked out my interpretation of the chords and lyrics, which you can check on on my Kooks song chords page at the link below:

PJs Kooks Guitar Chords and Lyrics page

Once again, it's in a somewhat awkward key - F sharp - so I've transposed the chords down to F, if you put a capo on the first fret you should get the right sound if you want to play along with the original.

You can buy all of the Kooks music at CDUniverse - The Kooks Music page

The Fratellis - "Look out Sunshine" chords & lyrics

The second Fratellis album "Here we Stand" continues to grow on me. After the euphoria of "Costello Music", to my mind the best debut album in decades, I feared that the follow-up was lacking in some of the urgency and feelgood factor of it's predecessor, but I think it may just be a "slow-burner", the new songs are beginning to acquire a personality of their own.

"Look out Sunshine" is the 2nd single from the album, another cynical but bouncy romp.

I've worked out my interpretation of the chords and lyrics of the song, and added it to my Fratellis song chords page:

The Fratellis guitar chords and lyrics

Once again, the song is in the key of B Major, and doesn't really lend itself to transcription to an easier key, sorry! Players in the early learning stage may find it tricky, but if you're a Fratellis fan, hopefully you'll stick with it, learn the song and improve your skills at the same time! If you took the plunge and learned "Mistress Mabel" ( also in B major ), you'll have already had loads of practice at the chord shapes and changes, so should find it easier this time around.

You can browse or buy the new album ( or "Costello Music") online at this CD Universe Fratellis music link.

Amy Winehouse - "F Me Pumps" chords & lyrics

"F Me Pumps", from the brilliant "Back to Black" album is the 11th Amy Winehouse song I've worked out and posted to my guitar chords site, having created an Amy Winehouse songs page some months ago. I realize that for the early learning guitar player some of the chords can be a bit tricky, but am working on the basis that if you like an artist enough to want to play their songs, you'll push yourself that bit harder!

My 'chords and lyrics' version of "F Me Pumps", can be found at my Amy Winehouse guitar songs link below, along with the others I've worked out previously:

Noah and the Whale - 5 Years Time chords & lyrics

I caught some of Noah and the Whale's performance at Glastonbury, and thought they were a really interesting new band. I gather they also played Lollapalooza last month, so I'm guessing they've made a bunch of fans Stateside now.

Since then "Five Years Time" has been getting considerable airplay on radio, having been originally released in 2007, and re-released in 2008, hitting the UK top 10.

I've worked out my version of the chords and lyrics for the song ( very simple, three chords - C, F and G ) and I have posted these to my Rock guitar songs page at the link below:

Katy Perry - I kissed a girl chords and lyrics

Ok, regular visitors to the Blog or to the website ( PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics ) may find this song a strange addition to the eclectic mix you will have become used to. While the site does have a 'Pop Songs' page, it would be very seldom these days that the type of song to hit #1 in both the UK and US Top 40 singles charts would be one I would consider working out and adding to the blog/website.

But I found myself humming and strumming along to the radio while this song was playing, and it does have a really nice sequence of simple, straightforward chords, and actually sounds fine just on an acoustic ( I got my daughter to sing and play it ). Plus I'm struggling to maintain my quota of songs with female vocals, generally only managing one or two among the ten songs I add each month. And... well, I like the song, it has a fun theme which makes it a good 'party piece'.

So, making no apologies, I've posted my version of the chords and lyrics to "I kissed a girl" at the link below:

The Shins - Black Wave chords and lyrics

As promised, I am continuing to include a Shins song in each monthly update.

Sticking with the latest album ( "Wincing the night away" ), this time I've gone for "Black Wave", one of my favourite tracks from the album.

I've worked out my interpretations of the chords and lyrics - somewhat surprisingly it consists of just three easy chords - G major, E minor and B minor. Obviously impossible to recreate the original sound with just three chords on an acoustic guitar, but the intent of my site ( and this blog ) is to provide playable songs for those in the early learning stages. You can still get a lot of satisfaction ( and fun ) from playing 'busking' versions of your favourite songs.

Anywaze - you'll find my interpretation of "Black Wave" on my guitar chords website at the link below:

The Zutons - Always right behind you chords and lyrics

My first experience of the Zutons was watching them play "Confusion" on the Jonathan Ross show some time ago. I really like the band, they mix it up a bit in terms of musical styles and genres - not maybe a ground-breaking band, but right up there in my book with the other "Indie-Rock" ( or other label of your choice ) bands like The Kooks, The Killers, The Fratellis etc.

I haven't really had a chance to hear their debut album, "You Will, You Won't", but I have already posted two songs from "Who Killed the Zutons" ( "Remember Me", and "Confusion" ), and two from "Tired of Hanging Around" ( "Valerie" and "Why won't you give me your love" ).

I have now worked out my easy-to-play version of "Always right behind you" from the new "You can do anything" album. It's a happy-go-lucky, 70's throwback basic rock'n'roller of a song, with just 3 chords ( well 4 if you count B and B7 as two of them ). I've posted the song to the Zutons page on my Guitar Chords and Lyrics site, at the link below:

Wilco - "I'm the man who loves you" chords & lyrics

Continuing my program of adding at least one Wilco song in each monthly update, having become a recent convert.

I'm dipping back into their 2002 epic "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", which is still my favourite, and adding the brilliant "I'm the man who loves you"

As well as being a great song to sing, it also has the advantage for early learners of only having four chords - F, C, Bb (B flat) and G.

As I plan to continue to add more Wilco songs, I have transferred the existing songs - "Heavy Metal Drummer", "I am Trying to Break your Heart", "Jesus Etc." and "Either Way" from my
Rock Guitar Songs page to a new Wilco Guitar Songs page, and you will find my interpretation of "I'm the man who loves you" at this new link ( see below )

Belle & Sebastian - Step into my Office chords and lyrics

Although they've been around since 1996, I've only recently started listening to their music. I have so far only worked out the chords to "If you're feeling sinister" from the 1996 album of the same name ( it's on my rock guitar chords page )

Jumping forward to 2003, I have now also worked out playable chords and lyrics for "Step into my office, baby" from the "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" album. Once again it is a really upbeat, feelgood song to play. Quite a few chords and quirky in places, so early learners may struggle a bit, but if you like the song it's well worth persisting with, it's one of those impressive performance songs, if you can pull it off. My interpretation of the song is at the link below:

Dresden Dolls - Jeep Song chords & lyrics

The Dresden Dolls, who describe themselves as "Brechtian Punk Cabaret" ( can't argue with that! ) were first burned into my consciousness when a friend played me "Coin Operated Boy" a few years ago. I loved the sound, Amanda Palmer's almost Waits-ian singing style is superb. I posted the chords and lyrics to "Coin Operated Boy" back in June 2005 and can't believe that I didn't follow up with more.

I'm rectifying the omission now, I've posted my interpretation of "Jeep Song", which is also from their eponymous first album to my Rock Guitar Chords page at the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics to 'Jeep Song' by Dresden Dolls.

I hope to post more, though there is so much going on in many of the songs, they don't all lend themselves to just strumming on an old acoustic!

Lucky Jim - "Lovely to me" chords and lyrics

TV advertistements continue to be a great source of songs for me to work out and add to the collection on my site. There are some absolutely dreadful advertisements out there, but luckily there are at least a few TV ad execs who get that putting a catchy, fairly unknown song ( e.g. Willy Mason "Oxygen" for Sony Bravia ) is a great attention grabber, and gets people talking about the ad, the song ( and possibly even the product! ).

On UK TV recently there has been an ad for Kingsmill bread which featured a song called "Lovely to Me" which really grabbed popular attention. For the first few weeks of the ad when I Googled the song name, all I could get were questions on forums asking 'What is this song? Who sings it? Why haven't we heard it before?.

Well, I'm still not a whole lot wiser, seems to be nothing on Wikipedia, but I do know that the song is by an artist called Lucky Jim, and taken from his 2004 album "Our troubles end tonight".

Anywaze, I've worked out my version of the chords and lyrics to the song, and posted them to my Guitar Chords and Lyrics site at the link below:

Lyrics and Guitar Chords for "Lovely to Me" by Lucky Jim

If you've heard the song and want to check out the rest of Lucky Jim's work, try this CD Universe - Lucky Jim music page

Modest Mouse - Good Times are killing me chords

I have to admit I'd heard a few Modest Mouse songs without getting too excited, until I heard the anthemic "Good Times are killing me". I'm making time to give them a second chance and listen to more of their stuff - after all, any band with Johnny Marr on guitar can't be bad, can they? So far, listening to "Good News for people who love bad news", I have taken to "Blame it on the Tetons", "Float On" and "Black Cadillacs", as well as "Good Times".

I've worked out my interpretation of "The Good Times are Killing me", click the link below to check it out:

Another great song from Sheffield's finest, The Arctic Monkeys, from their latest ( and brilliant )

The band are considered to be one of the first to have gained their success via the internet, and may be trailblazers for the many bands who are sharing their songs on the various social web spaces ( Myspace, Facebook, YouTube etc. ).

Tom Waits - Day after Tomorrow chords and lyrics

Although I still have some songs from the most recently released album "Orphans" to post, I was listening to a random Tom Waits playlist recently, and realised that I'd omitted to post chords for the brilliantly understated but really powerful anti-war song from "Real Gone" - "Day after Tomorrow".

Again apologies for not having more Tom songs on the site, but it's almost impossible for me to play a single Tom Waits song ( which I obviously have to do when working them out ), when it's so much more enjoyable to listen to the next song, and the next....!

But I've knuckled down, and you'll find the chords and lyrics to "Day after Tomorrow" below. It's a great song to sing, and tho' no-one will better Tom's version, it IS possible to sing without the gravelly, two-pints-of-bourbon-and-60-cigarettes vocals.

Old 97's - "Question" chords and lyrics

The Global Village is most definitely shrinking!

My daughter, who spent the summer in Kentucky, Skyped me to let me listen to this song, which was playing on an episode of 'Scrubs' she'd recorded, and asked me to work out the chords for her. I'd never heard of the Old 97's, but checked them out on Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Old_97's ) .

They seem to be something of a 'nearly' band, lots of acclaim from the music press, but very little chart success for their albums.

But - the song was too good not to include on my site, I found a version on YouTube and worked out the chords and lyrics from that, and have posted these to my Rock guitar songs page at the link below:
