John Mayer - "Say" chords and lyrics

To be honest, working out versions of John Mayer songs suitable for learning to intermediate guitar players is quite a challenge, but his latest song "Say", from the film sountrack of "The Bucket List", is a really nice, melodic song, and with the use of the learning guitarist's best friend, the Capo, can be played with very basic chords - G, C, D, Em and Am7

I've worked out my interpretation of the song which you can find on the link below:

Chords and lyrics for John Mayer songs

"Say" has been added to the re-released versions of John Mayer's third album "Continuum", from which I've already included chords for "Waiting on the World to Change". There are now 15 songs on the John Mayer page (above).

Find out more about John Mayer on his website: http://www.johnmayer.com/ and on Wikipedia's John Mayer page

You can sample and purchase John Mayer CDs, DVDs etc at the CD Universe page below:

Wilco - guitar chords to Heavy Metal Drummer & Break Your Heart

Having been introduced to Wilco by my daughters, who are big fans, I posted 'Either Way' from last year's "Sky Blue Sky" to my Miscellaneous Rock Guitar Songs page some months ago.

Since then I've been listening to them on and off, and have particularly taken to the "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" album, all great songs.

I have recently posted my interpretations of the guitar chord and lyrics for both "Heavy Metal Drummer" and "I am Trying to Break your Heart", both from Yankee Hotel Foxtrol, also to my Miscellaneous Rock Guitar Songs page at the links below:

Check out the songs on YouTube, hopefully these interpretations can help you play along with the songs while learning them.

Mew - Symmetry guitar chords and lyrics

Denmark's finest, 'Mew' are what I suppose would be classified as an 'Indie Rock' band, making what one critic called 'dreamy thunderstorm pop'

As one of my daughter's favourite bands, I've been under a little pressure to try working out chord versions of some of their songs, which to be honest is not easy. I had previously worked out and posted 'She came home for Christmas', which ( I have been reminded ) was in the charts for Christmas 2003. I have had "Symmetry", which also appeared on the 2003 album "Frengers", on my "to-do" list since then also, so decided to finally tackle it as part of my May selection of songs.

I had been previously put off by finding some fairly badly transcribed 'Tab' versions of the song, and trying to work out chord versions from these. This time I just listened to the song, figured that the first chord was B flat major 7th... stuck a capo on the 1st fret and ended up with a very nice, and quite playable chord sequence - a Gmaj7 Dmaj7 riff for the verses, with D, E, Bm, A and G thrown in for the Bridge and Chorus.

According to Wikipedia, "Symmetry" features vocals from 14 year old Becky Jarrett of Georgia, USA.

I've posted the chords and lyrics for "Symmetry" to my Pop Guitar Songs page at the link below:

Brendan Benson - Metarie chords and lyrics

Another requested song - and it surprised me somewhat that this is only the second Brendan Benson song I've attempted to work out. Multi-instrumentalist and Raconteur Brendan has been around for about 10 years, and has released seven albums ( 5 solo, and two with the Raconteurs, a band formed with White Stripe's Jack White in 2006 ).

I've enjoyed pretty much everthing of his I've heard, 'tho not all of it would have lent itself to working out straightforward chords, particularly for early learning guitarists, or for acoustic guitar players.

"Metarie", which was released as an EP in 2003 can be played with fairly straightforward chords - Bm7, D, A, E and F#. There is a little riff on the E chord in the chorus involving moving the 4th finger along the 2nd, 3rd and 4th frets ( I named these E1, E2, E3, E4 rather than dig out the technically correct chord titles, as it basically comes under the heading "E riff"! ). A bit of a stretch on the poor pinky, but it's good exercise for that under-used digit!!

The chords for "Metarie" are now on my Rock Guitar Chords page at the link below:

PJs Rock Guitar Chords and Lyrics page

Thanks to Jimmy in Sweden for the request - I think if you know the song, it will be a good one to add to your repertoire, it can sound really good once you've mastered the little chorus riff.

You can buy Brendan Benson music, and Raconteurs music, at CD Universe - Brendan Benson Music / Raconteurs Music page

Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet about Me chords and lyrics

At the tender age of 16, Austrialian singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi is something of a veteran, having signed her first US recording contract when she was just 13!

I first heard her last December, when she sang "Sweet About Me" on Later with Jools Holland.

The song has stuck in me head since, and I'm delighted to see that it is now a successful single. I think we'll be hearing much more from the talented Ms. Cilmi in the coming years.

I've worked out my version of the song chords, which you can check out at the link below:

The Kooks 'Seaside' chords and lyrics

I recently posted "Always where I need to be" from the new Kooks album "Konk" - and hopefully will be working out some more songs from this excellent 2nd album.

But... I received a request ( or possibly a reprimand ) from one of my visitors, who asked in my Guestbook if I could post a "simple" version of "Seaside", the first track from their debut album "Inside in/Inside Out'.

When I listened to the song again, I could see what he meant - it was in the key of E flat minor ( well, actually F sharp major but let's not get hung up on detail! ), which doesn't lend itself to handy chords for the learning guitarist to get around.

So I transposed the chords down to B minor ( A major ), which produced a set of chords ( Bm, D, G, A, E ) which most early learners could get their fingers around, and posted it to PJs Guitar Chords at the link below:

PJs Kooks Guitar Chords and Lyrics page

It's a short, cute little summer song, check it out here on Youtube and see if you can play along. If you put a capo on the 4th fret, and play the chords indicated, you should find that you're in the right key.

You can buy all of the Kooks music at CDUniverse - The Kooks Music page

Wilco - 'I am trying to break your heart' chords

Wilco have been one of those 'slow-burner' bands for me. Always quite liked them, bought the albums, but never really listened to them that often. I had posted "Jesus Etc" and "Either Way" earlier, to my Miscellaneous Rock guitar songs page, mainly on my daughters' recommendations. But I listened to them exclusively recently while walking the pup, and have definitely 'seen the light' - I hope to work out and post enough of their songs to warrant a seperate Wilco page on the site, very soon.

Meanwhile, I have worked out my version of "I am trying to break your heart" from the somewhat controversial "Yankee Foxtrot Tango" album, and for the time being, posted it to the Misc. Rock songs page at the link below:

Badfinger - Come and get it chords and lyrics

I've often been listening to radio, or watching TV and a great old 70s song from my .. em.. infancy... comes on, and I think 'That's a brilliant guitar song, nice chord sequence, not too tricky, good melody' But I end up not working it out for inclusion on my guitar chords Website or this Blog on the basis that most of the guitar community are just too young to know the song.

This situation arose recently watching "Top of the Pops 2" when Badfinger appeared, playing "Come and Get It", a really nice pop/rock song, with a great melody, and mostly straightforward chords, with one or two challenging ones for the early learning guitarist.

So I figured that while there will be people going 'What-finger? - who???', that in the age of YouTube and Wikipedia there are no excuses for anyone not being able to listen to a song, or find out about an artist - I'll post it, and encourage people to have a listen and maybe learn a little about the band. They were actually mentored by none other than The Beatles ( particularly George, if memory serves ), and for a while were touted as the next BIG band from the Apple label.

Unfortunately tragedy overtook two of the band members, and the band never realised it's potential. But they have left us with some great tracks, and I'm happy to have worked out chords and lyrics to 'Come and Get it', which I've posted on my Pop guitar songs page, at the link below:

Chords and Lyrics to Pop songs - Badfinger 'Come and get it'

You can buy Badfinger music at CDUniverse - Badfinger Music page

While there doesn't appear to be an official Badfinger website, individual members have their sites ( just search for: badfinger official website ), as usual wikipedia is the best source of information if you want to find out more about the band. Link below:
