Tom Waits "Walk Away" Guitar Chords and Lyrics

It will be no surprise to my regular Blog readers that I'm one of Tom Waits' biggest fans. With the possible exception of Dylan and Cohen, no-one has transformed the musical landscape over the past 40 years more than Tom Waits.

Despite the fact that there are over 60 of my chords and lyrics transcriptions of his songs on my Tom Waits song chords page, it is really difficult to break most of his songs down to simple chords and lyrics versions, because of the diversity of instruments and strange and wonderful percussive devices he uses.

But, I've promised to continue to post songs from "Orphans" ( and his other albums ), so I've just finished working out my simplified version of "Walk Away", from the "Brawlers" set.

The chords themselves are a simple combination of Am, E7 and Dm, as you can see in the song transcription below:

Tom Waits "Alice" guitar chords & lyrics

This is another song which somehow 'slipped thru the cracks'. I discovered my transposition of 'Alice' while migrating my site to a new host recently. Another one I had worked out and forgotten to post to the site. Ah well, better late than never, I s'pose...

In fairness, Tom did release 'Alice' and 'Woyczec' - two albums with totally contrasting material, on the same date in 2002 - as a huge Tom Waits fan, I probably spent that whole month just listening to the great new songs.

But I have now posted the chords for "Alice to my Tom Waits songs page at the link below:

Guitar chords and Lyrics for Tom Waits songs - "Alice"

You should try playing along with the video (above), or on Alice on Youtube

The original is in the key of F#m, which throws out somee tricky enough chords, so I've transposed it down to Em ( Check out my guide to chord transposition, to see how this is done. ). Anywaze, this leads to a more manageable set of chords - Am7, B7, Em, and E7. It's one of Tom's softer songs ( "Bawlers..." ), so you don't have to drink a quart of bourbon and smoke 60 Lucky Strikes before attempting it...!

Tom Waits - "Briar and the Rose" guitar chords

Always delighted to get requests for Tom Waits songs, mainly 'cos he's about my favourite artist, and also because I usually already have the chords for the song requested.

But typically...! Alan from Wellington, New Zealand requested chords for "Briar and the Rose" from the "Black Rider" album, which, I think, is the only Tom Waits album I don't own.

Strangely very little available on YouTube ( my reliable standby for songs I don't know ). I found a recent Live version of Tom singing the song at the French leg of his European tour, and a bunch of cover versions by various artists.

The live version was played in the key of E flat, so I stuck a capo on the first fret and worked out the chords in D, to be able to play along with the YouTube video. The other versions I checked out, and they were all in the key of G, so I've included both transcriptions in my interpretation of the song, which you can find at the link below:

Guitar chords and Lyrics for Tom Waits songs - "Briar and the Rose"

It's an absolutely delicious song, so thanks Alan, and I have a feeling the "Black Rider" CD could be in my stocking this Christmas!

Tom Waits "Tell It To Me" guitar chords & lyrics

As a huge Tom Waits fan, its pretty bad form that I had to wait for a visitor's request to sit down and work out another song from the fabulous "Orphans". Anyone familiar with the album will know that there are 3 'themed' CDs - 'Bawlers' , 'Brawlers' and 'Bastards'.

The latter consists of some weird and wonderful pieces, some spoken, some with just Tom on voice-box, but pretty much none of which are suited to just playing solo on a guitar. The songs from 'Brawlers' are tricky enough too. So far I've worked out only "Rains on Me" from 'Brawlers', and 'Poncho's Lament', 'Long Way Home', 'Little Drop of Poison' and 'Fannin Street' from the gorgeous "Bawlers" CD - all of these posted to my Tom Waits song chords page

This time around it's another 'Bawler' - "Tell it To Me" - the chords should be suited to guitar players of all abilities ( chords are C, C7, G and F ), and you can find it at the link below:

Tom Waits - Day after Tomorrow chords and lyrics

Although I still have some songs from the most recently released album "Orphans" to post, I was listening to a random Tom Waits playlist recently, and realised that I'd omitted to post chords for the brilliantly understated but really powerful anti-war song from "Real Gone" - "Day after Tomorrow".

Again apologies for not having more Tom songs on the site, but it's almost impossible for me to play a single Tom Waits song ( which I obviously have to do when working them out ), when it's so much more enjoyable to listen to the next song, and the next....!

But I've knuckled down, and you'll find the chords and lyrics to "Day after Tomorrow" below. It's a great song to sing, and tho' no-one will better Tom's version, it IS possible to sing without the gravelly, two-pints-of-bourbon-and-60-cigarettes vocals.

Little Drop of Poison - Tom Waits

I have been remiss in not posting any songs by my favourite arist of late.

This is another song from the amazing triple CD "Orphans - Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards" by the indescribably brilliant Tom Waits.

This time round I've worked out my interpretation of the wonderfully quirky "Little Drop of Poison", from the "Bawlers" CD, this song also featured in the soundtrack of "Shrek 2"

You can find my version of the chords and lyrics to "Little Drop of Poison" at the link below:

Tom Waits - Fannin Street chords and lyrics

Another song from the amazing triple CD "Orphans - Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards" by the indescribably brilliant Tom Waits. I must admit I have been very lax in working out songs from this album, it's all too easy to just sit back and enjoy the genius that is Tom, without having to pause to check a chord change or figure out a lyric.

But... I love to play the songs myself, so I will persist!

This time round I've worked out my interpretation of the gorgeously understated "Fannin Street", from the "Bawlers" CD, which contains the more ballady stuff.

You can find my version of the chords and lyrics to "Fannin Street" at the link below:

Tom Waits, John Kongos songs

Two new songs added to the site, the delicious "Singapore" by the inimitable Tom Waits, and a probably lesser known song: "Tokoloshe Man" by John Kongos.

My love of Tom Waits music is probably pretty obvious by now! Much of his stuff is difficult to translate just for guitar, but I've done my best with "Singapore", great song!

You can find my interpretation on my Tom Waits page:

http://www.guitarsongs.info/waits.htm

Younger visitors are probably saying "John WHO??". But if you haven't heard Kongos' early 70's 'Jungle Stomp' songs, you should really try to get hold of both "Tokoloshe Man" and "He's Gonna Step on you again" ( covered by Def Leppard, among others ) - the songs are available on iTunes according to www.johnkongos.com. His "Tribal Stomp" sound was, I believe, the first use of authentic African music fused with rock, well worth checking out.

Both songs are posted on my "Rock Songs" page, at:

http://www.guitarsongs.info/rock.htm#Hs ( "He's gonna step..." ) and
http://www.guitarsongs.info/rock.htm#Ts ( "Tokoloshe Man" ).

10 Million guitarists can't be wrong!

On Wednesday 5th July, I received the 10 millionth visitor to my website ...... 10 MILLION!!

I was delighted, humbled, proud... and pretty much gobsmacked! That's more than twice the population of the country I live in! Ten million visitors - that's a lot of tea and biscuits!!
Certainly not what I expected when I created the site as a hobby/experiment back in 1999. And quite an achievement for a one-man, (very) amateur outfit competing for traffic with some very large 'company' guitar sites.

Apologies for blowing my own trumpet there, but it is a huge landmark for me.

Anywaze, since my last post I have issued the monthly guitar newsletter with 10 songs added to the site, some more guitar tips, recommended online guitar and music resources and latest news. I've published it online at http://www.guitarsongs.info/news.htm - the new songs are from Pink, Christy Moore, John Kongos, Raconteurs, Sheryl Crow/Sting, Tom Waits , The Shins, Jack Johnson , Bob Marley and Keane.

I hope you find it useful, and thank you for your continued support of the website, and for helping me achieve this amazing milestone.

Enjoy your music,

Whistle Down The Wind - Tom Waits

Just been saying that I need to get working on more of the songs from the fantastic Tom Waits 'Orphans' ( Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards ) Triple-CD, but I received a request for "Whistle Down The Wind" from the earlier (1994) "Bone Machine". I'd forgotten how good this album was, so I've been catching up.

I've worked out my playable version of the chords and lyrics to "Whistle Down The Wind", and added them to my Tom Waits page. It's a typical Tom ballad, and with my basic guitar chords you can just get away with it, though it's pretty much a piano song. I hope you'll give it a go, see how you like it.

Long Way Home - Tom Waits

I've had the Tom Waits 'Orphans' Triple-CD since Christmas, so I've surprised myself with how few of the songs I've worked on since then. While the 'Bastards' ( 3rd CD of the set ) songs are unlikely to suit acoustic or rhythm guitar, there are a bunch of songs on the 'Bawlers' and even on the 'Brawlers' CDs, so I'm going to try catch up over the next while.

With this in mind, I've just added my version of the chords and lyrics to "Long Way Home" to my Tom Waits song chords page. Very playable - and you don't have to do the 'Tom' voice!! It actually has a bit of a Springsteen feel to it, much like 'Hold On' from 'Mule Variations'. See what you think of it. If you are a new visitor, or haven't visited in a while, check out the more than 1,600 songs on my song chords and lyrics site

Tom Waits - Rains on Me Chords

I can't believe that it has taken me so long to post a song from the latest Tom Waits Album "Orphans - Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards". Certainly no reflection on the album, which is brilliant! Although it's a collection of songs from various projects and other unreleased recordings, the quality of the songs is superb, it was exactly like a new album being released - only with 54 new songs!!

The categorised format exactly fitted my Tom playlists on my Zen - LiteWaits, MiddleWaits and HeavyWaits, which made the upload really easy!

Anywaze, I have added my version of the chords and lyrics for "Rains on Me" ( which I think is a Chuck E. Weiss colloboration ) to my Tom Waits Songs page -
http://www.guitarsongs.info/waits.htm

Find out more about the album on his new record label's page http://www.anti.com/catalog.php?id=69 or check out the official Tom Waits page at http://www.officialtomwaits.com/main.htm
