The Smiths "Cemetry Gates" guitar chords & lyrics

"The Queen is Dead" is widely recognized as the finest Smiths album, it's certainly my favourite!

The Smiths were one of very few bands and artists - Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Madness, Nirvana - who sustained me through the 80's. Morrissey's quirky lyrics and compelling voice and Johnny Marr's acrobatic guitar playing were a real breath of fresh air.

I've already posted a few of the songs from the album to my Smiths guitar chords page, including "Frankly Mr. Shankly", "Bigmouth", "There is a light that never goes out" (great, great song!), I've now added "Cemetry Gates" (original spelling) to the list.

Quite easy chords (for The Smiths!) - just G, C, D, Em and Bm, with a Gmaj7 thrown in for the opening and closing riffs. Obviously you're not gonna recreate the Smiths sound just playing chords, but you can still have a lot of fun with this song. Check out the chords and lyrics at the link below:

White Lies "Death" guitar chords and lyrics

With a sound reminiscent of The Killers, Kings of Leon and Arcade Fire, 'White Lies' - a London band formed from the members of Fear of Flying released their first album "To Lose My Life" earlier this year.

I have worked out the chords and lyrics for the first single from the album "Death", and added them to my Rock guitar songs page. Definitely a band to watch out for, really like their sound.

The chords are not that tricky, with most of the first verse being G, C and D, and a Bm and A mixed in thru the pre-chorus and chorus. There is a nifty change in the chord pattern for verse 2, from G-D-C-D to G-Em-C, but that's about it! A fairly playable set of chords, even for early learners.

Wilco - "Via Chicago" chords and lyrics

Recently posted chords and lyrics for Wilco "Summer teeth" , title track of the album from back in 1999.

As I was listening to the album, there were a few stand-out tracks, one of which, "Via Chicago" I decided would be good to work out and play.

There is a little Dmaj7-D 'thing' at the start of each line, but it basically just involves playing the Dmaj7 chord and a 'hammer-on' of the middle finger to make the D chord. Other than that the song is all D, A, G making it a nice but easy song for begginners to learn.

Lady Lenka - The Show chords and lyrics

This is another one of those really good songs I first heard on a TV advert, though I can't actually remember what the ad was for! Took me a while to locate it, as I thought it was called "Caught in the middle", but a search on the always reliable Wikipedia set me straight.

It's just a really nice bubbly pop song, easy to play, and one I can imagine many people would enjoy playing.

The chords are very straightforward - C, G, Am and F, and there is an infectious dum-de-dum ending part, that your audience are bound to sing along to!

Tom Waits "Tell It To Me" guitar chords & lyrics

As a huge Tom Waits fan, its pretty bad form that I had to wait for a visitor's request to sit down and work out another song from the fabulous "Orphans". Anyone familiar with the album will know that there are 3 'themed' CDs - 'Bawlers' , 'Brawlers' and 'Bastards'.

The latter consists of some weird and wonderful pieces, some spoken, some with just Tom on voice-box, but pretty much none of which are suited to just playing solo on a guitar. The songs from 'Brawlers' are tricky enough too. So far I've worked out only "Rains on Me" from 'Brawlers', and 'Poncho's Lament', 'Long Way Home', 'Little Drop of Poison' and 'Fannin Street' from the gorgeous "Bawlers" CD - all of these posted to my Tom Waits song chords page

This time around it's another 'Bawler' - "Tell it To Me" - the chords should be suited to guitar players of all abilities ( chords are C, C7, G and F ), and you can find it at the link below:

The Shins - Caring is Creepy chords and lyrics

My first exposure to the Shins, as with quite a few bands, was hearing one of their songs ( New Slang ) on the TV show "Scrubs". I bought the album "Oh Inverted World", but really only gave it a few listens. Walking the pup has proved to be a great way for me to rediscover bands like this, as my random MP3 player list throws up gems that make me take out the player to check the band and song.

This has happened with several Shins songs, so I created a seperate Shins page on my free guitar songs website a few weeks ago. I have now worked out my interpretation of "Caring is Creepy", and have added it to my The Shins songs page - check it out at the link below:

Kings of Leon - On Call chords and lyrics

This is my third attempt at 'chording' a Kings of Leon song - following on from "Bucket" ( from the "Aha Shake Handbrake" album) and "Fans" ( from "Because of the Times" ) both of which you can see on my Miscellaneous Rock Guitar Songs page

"On Call" is one of the other singles from "Because of the Times". It's a challenging enough song vocally, but I've worked out a pretty playable version with just 3 chords - G, Bm and Em. Click the link below to try it out:

Brendan Benson - Metarie chords and lyrics

Another requested song - and it surprised me somewhat that this is only the second Brendan Benson song I've attempted to work out. Multi-instrumentalist and Raconteur Brendan has been around for about 10 years, and has released seven albums ( 5 solo, and two with the Raconteurs, a band formed with White Stripe's Jack White in 2006 ).

I've enjoyed pretty much everthing of his I've heard, 'tho not all of it would have lent itself to working out straightforward chords, particularly for early learning guitarists, or for acoustic guitar players.

"Rock guitar songs - Metarie", which was released as an EP in 2003 can be played with fairly straightforward chords - Bm7, D, A, E and F#. There is a little riff on the E chord in the chorus involving moving the 4th finger along the 2nd, 3rd and 4th frets ( I named these E1, E2, E3, E4 rather than dig out the technically correct chord titles, as it basically comes under the heading "E riff"! ). A bit of a stretch on the poor pinky, but it's good exercise for that under-used digit!!

Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet about Me chords and lyrics

At the tender age of 16, Austrialian singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi is something of a veteran, having signed her first US recording contract when she was just 13!

I first heard her last December, when she sang "Sweet About Me" on Later with Jools Holland.

The song has stuck in me head since, and I'm delighted to see that it is now a successful single. I think we'll be hearing much more from the talented Ms. Cilmi in the coming years.

Whistle Down The Wind - Tom Waits

Just been saying that I need to get working on more of the songs from the fantastic Tom Waits 'Orphans' ( Bawlers, Brawlers and Bastards ) Triple-CD, but I received a request for "Whistle Down The Wind" from the earlier (1994) "Bone Machine". I'd forgotten how good this album was, so I've been catching up.

I've worked out my playable version of the chords and lyrics to "Whistle Down The Wind", and added them to my Tom Waits page. It's a typical Tom ballad, and with my basic guitar chords you can just get away with it, though it's pretty much a piano song. I hope you'll give it a go, see how you like it.

Wilco - 'I am trying to break your heart' chords

Wilco have been one of those 'slow-burner' bands for me. Always quite liked them, bought the albums, but never really listened to them that often. I had posted "Jesus Etc" and "Either Way" earlier, to my Rock guitar songs page, mainly on my daughters' recommendations. But I listened to them exclusively recently while walking the pup, and have definitely 'seen the light' - I hope to work out and post enough of their songs to warrant a seperate Wilco page on the site, very soon.

Glen Hansard - Falling Slowly chords and lyrics

In February, "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard ( of The Frames songs fame ) and Marketa Irglova won an Academy Award for "Best Original Song" ( From the film "Once" ). The Frames are one of the most underrated bands on the planet, and Glen ( who appeared as 'Outspan' in 1991's "The Committments" ), is thoroughly deserving of this great achievement.

The Arcade Fire - Wake Up Chords

Another band I really need to catch up with is "Arcade Fire". While being aware of them for some time, I really haven't taken the time to listen to their work.

They are a Canadian band founded in 2003 by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne ( husband and wife ), and have released two studio albums - "Funeral" in 2004 and "Neon Bible" earlier this year.

"Wake up" comes from the earlier album, and I've added my chords and lyrics version of the song to my Rock Songs Guitar Chords page at the link below:
Hopefully I will manage to add another couple from this album before moving on to "Neon Bible".
