Guitar chords for The Pogues "Dirty Old Town" and "Fiesta"

Forging on with my website upgrade,  today I'm moving on to my Pogues guitar songs page, and giving the 'makeover' and health check to two of my favourite songs of theirs, "Dirty Old Town", and "Fiesta" .  "Dirty Old Town" is an old classic ballad by Ewan McColl ( father of the late and sadly missed Kirsty ), covered by many artists, but The Pogues version has always been my favourite.  "Fiesta" is a riotous Mariachi band pastiche that always brings a smile to the face.

The new pages containing these songs are at the links below, and videos for both songs have been embedded. The songs are chorded in the correct key for playing along with the video.

"Dirty Old Town" features chords - G   C   D  and Em,  but for the harmonica intro the key is changed to D, so the chords here are  D  G  A  and Bm.  For a later instrumental part, on Uileann Pipes,  the key changes to  C, so the chords here are  C  F  G  and Am  ( see Guitar Chords for Dirty Old Town )

"Fiesta" has chords  -  G   D7  and  C,  with a G#o ( xx3434 ) and a Cm in the closing chords ( see Guitar Chords for Fiesta )

These new versions have been added to the other Pogues on the page.  I'll be tackling these on my next pass through. You can find all of  my Pogues songs guitar transcriptions at the link below:

Guitar Chords for Randy Newman "Jolly Coppers" and "My Old Kentucky Home"

Continuing with my improvement and audit project for the older songs on my website PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics ,  today I'm taking two songs from my Randy Newman page, "Jolly Coppers" ( from the "Little Criminals" album ) and "My Old Kentucky Home" ( from the "12 Songs" album )

You can check out the updated pages with these songs, complete with embedded videos of the songs to play along with, at the links below.

Note:  for "Jolly Coppers", I've chorded the song in the key of G - in the video Randy plays it in F#.  This would lead to a really complex set of chords, so I figure most learning guitarists would prefer to play it in G, just a semitone higher.  This means that to play along with the video, you will need to tune each string on your guitar down one semitone, i.e.  Eb Ab C# F# Bb Eb ( or put a capo on the 11th fret! ).  In this case it would be best to just listen to the song, learn the rhythms, strumming patterns and vocal nuances, and then pick up the guitar and try to play the song in G, having learned how the song should sound and 'feel'.

"Jolly Coppers" features the chords G  D6 ( x00230 ) Cmaj7  Am7  Em7  Bm7  C and C/D ( 030210 ) ( see Guitar Chords for Jolly Coppers )

"My Old Kentucky Home" can be played with just the chords G  D7 and C ( with Capo on 2nd Fret ). You could play without Capo, using chords A E7 and D, but I thing the song sounds better played in the key of G, see Guitar Chords for My Old Kentucky Home )

I've added these transcriptions to the other Randy Newman songs on the page, which will be updated later, you can find them all at the link below:

Guitar chords and lyrics for The Kinks "Lola" and "Waterloo Sunset"

I created my website PJs Guitar Chords and Lyrics 15 years ago.

Things were a lot different then, pages loaded very slowly, images, videos etc. were a huge overhead for a web designer trying to make their pages accessible for their visitors. My approach to this was to create web pages for each artist and genre on my site, with a list of the songs I've worked out, but with each song page being a plain text file, which loaded very quickly, and could be printed easily.

I'm now about 1/3 way through a project to convert these text files into web pages. This allows me to include links back to the artist and main pages, and also to embed videos of the songs, so that you can play along with the originals while you learn the songs.

Initially I looked on this as a 'chore', but by only taking two songs at a time from each artist, I managed to keep it interesting, and 'dug up' some treasures I had almost forgotten about myself. I'm checking out each song by playing along myself, to catch any 'doozers' and also to make sure I have the song in the original key ( or have transposed it, and shown which fret to use the capo on)

So today's artists are The Kinks, and I've given the 'makeover' to two of their most popular songs, "Lola" and "Waterloo Sunset", you can check them out at the links below.

I've also embedded the video links for the songs, so you can play along with the original and get a good feel for how the song should sound, guitar strumming patterns etc.

"Lola" features the chords C D E A Asus4 ( x02230 ), B, F#m, B7, C#m and G#m ( see Guitar Chords for Lola )

"Waterloo Sunset" can be played with A7, D, A, G, Em, G, B, E, E7 and A7 chords ( see Guitar Chords for Waterloo Sunset )

I've added these transcription to the other Kinks songs on the page, you can find them all at the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics "Aretha" by Rumer

Rumer is a British female pop/soul singer born in Pakistan. Her voice has been compared to many great female singers, including the late Karen Carpenter, but her vocals are a unique brand of sweet, bluesy and sultry, and I believe she will go on to be a huge star in her own right.

I had previously posted my chords and lyrics version of her first single "Slow", from her debut album "Seasons of the Soul". "Aretha" is the second single taken from the album, and is another gorgeous soulful ballad.

Rumer is already a hit with some top names in the business, having toured with Jools Holland and Joshua Radin among others, and has the distinction of having had a number of songs written especially for her by the great Burt Bacharach.

I have worked out my chords and lyrics version of "Aretha", and added it to my Soul Songs Guitar Chords page at the link below. The song is in the key of F major, which means there is a tricky enough selection of chords involved.

The chords are F, B flat, G minor, E flat, E flat minor, D minor and C minor. I would normally suggest transcription to a lower key, using a capo to bring the pitch up to the correct key, but in the final verse there is a key change from F to G, the chords here being G, C, A minor, F, F minor, D minor, and E7th.

Transcription would produce an easier set of chords for the main body of the song, but even more difficult chords for the last verse. In any case, the original chords just fit the bluesy feel of the song, so it is worth while putting in the extra effort to practice these chords.

You can try out my version of the song at the link below:

David Gray - "Fugitive" chords and lyrics

David Gray has just released his 8th album "Draw The Line", the first album of new songs since 2005's "Life in Slow Motion".

I've only had a brief listen to it, but it sounds like his songwriting is right back to the standard of his best work.

I had already posted 15 David Gray song chords to my website, PJ's Guitar Chords and Lyrics

I have now worked out my version of the great new single from the album "Fugitive", and posted it to the site at the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics to David Gray "Fugitive"

If the video of the song (above) doesn't play, you can listen to "Fugitive" on Youtube

Please take a few minutes to browse the other miscellaneous songs on my Rock guitar songs, Pop guitar songs or Folk guitar songspages or browse through the list of artists on the left of my Chords and Lyrics home page and pick some artists who's songs you'd like to play.

The Eels 'That Look You Give That Guy' chords & lyrics

I'd almost forgotten about The Eels - the last song of theirs I worked out and added to the site was "Last Stop This Town" from their 1998 album "Electro-Shock Blues".

Recently heard the single "That Look you give that guy" from their new album "Hombre Lobo" and have just worked out a chords & lyrics version of this, and added it to my Rock guitar songs page at the link below:

Guitar Chords and Lyrics to "That Look You Give That Guy" by The Eels.

The chords might look tricky for beginners, but are straightforward enough - C, C/B, Bb, A, Dm, Dm/C and G, repeated thru all verses and chorus. The C/B is just x2x010, and Dm/C is xx3x21.

If the video above doesn't load, click on this YouTube - The Eels 'That Look You Give That Guy' link.

Lisa Mitchell "Neapolitan Dreams" guitar chords and lyrics

Regular readers of my Blog will know that as I try to come up with good new songs for the website, I use TV shows and TV ads quite a lot for my inspiration.

The song from the UK "Surf" ad caught my attention quite a few weeks ago, but only this week I managed to catch the artistname and song title from a radio play - it's "Neapolitan Dreams" by Lisa Mitchell. I have to confess I knew nothing of Lisa, but have discovered from the ever-reliable Wikipedia that she is a young Austrialian singer-songwriter, and the song "Neapolitan Dreams" is from the soundtrack of "Packed to the Rafters", an Australian Comedy show. This album looks worth checking out, as it also features songs by Jason Mraz, Gabrielli Cilmi and Jose Gonzalez, among others.

"Neapolitan Dreams" is a really cute little song, and easy to play, featuring only 4 chords - C, C/B Am F, a very common riff - but Lisa gives the song a really distinctive sound. It is certainly one of those songs to add to the repertoire ( particularly for female guitarist/singers ), with it's anthemic "Ba-da, ba-da-da-da-da..." sing along bit at the end of the chorus, it should go down well at sessions with friends / family.

If you'd like to try playing this song, check out my interpretation at this link:

Greenday - Waiting chords and lyrics

Greenday are one of those bands who seem to have always been around, and for learning guitar players, provide a wealth of great and fun songs to have a really good go at.

I've added "Waiting", from the 2001 album "Warning" to my Greenday guitar chords site page. Mainly very playable chords, even for beginners, although the end gets a bit busy....! But definitely one to enjoy learning and playing, and to impress your friends with.

You can find the song on my Guitar Chords & Lyrics website, on the Greenday page.

Greenday's official website is at www.greenday.com Latest news is that Billie Joe's alternative band 'Pinhead Gunpowder' are playing California shortly.

BTW - If you are a wannabe lead guitar player, you really should check out James Todd's Guitar Leads website, it is a really excellent resource for guitarists of all levels to acquire or improve their lead guitar playing skills.

Paul Simon - Father and Daugter

It has been a while since I posted chords for a Paul Simon song. While I've never been a huge fan ( only 7 solo songs + 3 S&G songs on my Paul Simon guitar chords page ), I have bought most of the albums, without playing them all that often. Since I started to listen to music almost exclusively on my MP3 player, a bunch of songs I hadn't heard in a while are jumping out and reminding me how good they are. "Father and Daughter" is just one of these songs. The guitar chords aren't too tricky for a Paul Simon song, and as a father of two daughters, I can't help but be grabbed by the lyrics. You can find my version of the guitar chords and lyrics to "Father and Daughter" on my Paul Simon / Simon and Garfunkel guitar chords and lyrics page below:

John Mayer - 'Somethings Different' chords

I had a request from Dave Scott for John Mayer's "Something's Different", from the 2003 "Heavier Things" album. To be honest, working out versions of John Mayer songs suitable for learning to intermediate guitar players is quite a challenge, but it's a gorgeous song, so I've done my best with it, I hope I've done it justice. You can find it on my John Mayer guitar chords and lyrics page below:

I've been listening to John Mayer's third album "Continuum", so far only included "Waiting on the World to Change" from this one, but there are now 14 songs on the John Mayer page (above).

Tom Baxter - "Better" chords and lyrics

As I've found Tom Baxter's music gradually growing on me, I've created a Tom Baxter guitar songs page, which I will hopefully continue to update with my ( very basic ) versions of his songs.

I had already posted versions of "This Boy" and "Day in Verona", and have now added my interpretation of the chords and lyrics for the brilliant "Better", from his latest album "Skybound", which I understand is to be released this very day! Check out the link below if you would like to learn to play 'Better' or either of the earlier songs:

Wilco - Either Way Chords

Yet another band I keep promising to listen more too - Wilco, a kind of alternative country/indie band from Chicago. They've been around for quite a while ( first album released in 1995 ), but I'm listening to their later stuff and working my way back!

I've worked out my interpretation of "Either Way" from their new 2007 album "Sky Blue Sky" - a lovely song, one I really enjoy playing.

You can find my version of the song chords and lyrics for "Either Way" on my Rock Song chords page at the link below:

UPDATE 12 OCT 2009. This song, along with the other Wilco songs I've worked out, is now on my Wilco guitar chords and lyrics page. PJ

Magic Numbers - Love Me Like You/Wheels on Fire chords

Haven't posted a Magic Numbers song for a while, but I've been listening to them quite a bit lately, and getting to really like their songs. So I've worked out two more and added them to my site. As I plan to include more chords and lyrics for their songs, I've created a Magic Numbers Guitar Chords page on my site.

The new songs added are both from the eponymous 2005 "Magic Numbers" album - "Love me like you" and "Wheels on Fire". Great songs to sing, obviously better if you have someone to do the harmonies!

You can find my version of the chords and lyrics for the songs at the link below.

Just to remind you aboutn a cool software tool for musicians I featured on a previous Blog post - SongSurgeon. This program would be a boon to any musician, not just guitar players. Basically a very simple idea - you take a song you own in electronic format - CD, MP3, whatever, and the program allows you to slow it down without changing the pitch. You can mark a section ( e.g. guitar solo ) and loop so that it plays over and over. Simple, but brilliant!

I hate to think of the number of hours I've spent with fingers poisted over the Pause, Play, and 'Back' buttons, just to try to figure out a nifty guitar riff, or make sense of a vocal. Pity no-one came up with this idea years ago!

Anyway, I highly recommend that you check it out, at Song_Surgeon.com
